Why Basement Drains Back Up
The basement floor drain is the lowest opening in your plumbing system. When anything blocks the line downstream, water finds the lowest exit — which is why backups usually appear there first.
Common causes
- Clogs in the main sewer lateral from grease, wipes or debris
- Tree roots entering pipe joints
- Collapsed or sagging pipe sections
- Municipal sewer overload during heavy storms
- Laundry discharge overwhelming a partly blocked drain
Clues to the cause
- Backup when the washing machine drains → likely a partial main line clog
- Backup during heavy rain only → possible municipal surcharge or foundation drain connection
- Recurring backups in an older home with trees → roots
Prevention
- Keep grease and wipes out of drains
- Have the main line camera-inspected if backups recur
- Ask a plumber about a backwater valve
- Keep the floor drain trap filled with water
- Check for local subsidy programs before installing protective devices
