How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Ontario
Ontario winters are hard on plumbing. A few inexpensive steps in the fall can prevent the most common freeze-ups.
Before winter
- Shut off and drain outdoor taps from the inside valve, then leave the outside tap open.
- Disconnect garden hoses.
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas with foam sleeves.
- Seal air leaks around rim joists, vents and pipe penetrations.
- Consider frost-free hose bibs.
During cold snaps
- Open cabinet doors on exterior walls.
- Let a vulnerable tap trickle slowly.
- Keep the garage door closed if pipes run through it.
- Keep the thermostat steady, including overnight.
When you're away
- Keep the heat on at a moderate setting.
- Ask someone to check the house regularly.
- Consider shutting off the main valve and draining lines for long trips.
- A smart leak or temperature sensor can alert you remotely.
